Chillis are the fruit of plants belonging to the genus Capsicum and in the same family of plants as Potatoes and Tomatoes.
Used throughout in cooking and though known for being hot vary widely from being simply fragrant to very hot depending upon the capsaicin content. Known as the Scoville scale of hotness, Sweet (Bell) peppers have a rating of zero with no heat detectable whereas the Habanero chilli has a rating of 5 and almost unbareably hot. The Birdseye chilli is rated at 4.
